AFFIRMATIONS FOR A POSITIVE MINDSET
Sometimes we lose control over life or even just a moment. When that happens, it’s important to remain positive – and affirmations can make all the difference, keeping us calm, holding us steady, helping us get unstuck and providing encouragement. Positive affirmations can reset our thinking. When everything seems unsteady, they have the power to remind us that there’s hope, possibility and a way to take a step in the right direction.
What are affirmations? They’re short phrases or sentences that we repeat to ourselves; they can be positive or negative. When they’re negative, they increase stress, decrease self-esteem and make us feel pretty miserable. Negative affirmations support beliefs that undermine us and keep us from achieving our goals.
When the phrases we repeat to ourselves are positive, they help us by challenging unhelpful thinking and offering alternative perspectives. We're always talking to ourselves. Intentionally positive language is a kind of self-care, allowing us to choose a more constructive direction for our thoughts.
Positive affirmations help in many ways, including the following:
- They decrease stress and promote healing
- They refocus our thinking, from negative to positive
- They energize us and help us create positive behaviors
- They lift our mood
- They affect our beliefs about what is possible
- They keep us resilient and protect us from negative messages
- They remind us of the possibilities and suggest new posibitilites
- They are a way we can affirm and encourage ourselves
Affirmations work best when you align them with your values. Find the affirmations that feel right and try them out. Or create your own short phrases to keep your thinking optimistic and positive. Affirmations are a wonderful way to use self-talk to motivate and encourage yourself.
Incorporate affirmations into your daily life. Here’s how:
- Write them down and keep them where you’ll see them regularly
- Pick an affirmation and meditate on it
- Repeat an affirmation when you find yourself in a quiet moment
- Consciously take a moment to breathe, relax and repeat an affirmation
- Say your affirmations when you’re traveling
- Say your affirmations when you exercise or meditate
- Make affirmations part of your morning and/or evening routine
- Try some mirror work – it may feel odd at first, but affirming positive thoughts in front of the mirror can be helpful
- Repeat affirmations when you feel stressed to calm yourself
Another great way to integrate positive affirmations into your life is to write them into your journal!
- Write out an affirmation and meditate, take a breath and meditate on it
- Rewrite your affirmations several times and focus as you write – Meditative writing can be a powerful tool in your self-care
- Write an affirmation on the top of each journal page and/or doodle around them for fun and a boost of positivity
